personen- en familierechtrecht - verdrag tot afschaffing van het vereiste van legalisatie voor buitenlandse openbare akten ('s-Gravenhage, 5 oktober 1961, Trb. 1963, nr. 28) met als doel het wederzijds erkennen van officiële documenten waarop de voorgeschreven apostille (certificering van echtheid) op het stuk is geplaatst. Sinds de Conventie van Den Haag van 5 oktober 1961 is consulaire legalisatie niet nodig wanneer het document voorzien is van een apostille. Een apostille wordt afgegeven door de bevoegde autoriteit van het land waar het document vandaan komt – in Nederland zijn dat de Arrondissementsrechtbanken - en is van toepassing op de openbare akten. Volgens de Conventie van Den Haag wordt onder openbare akten verstaan documenten die zijn afgegeven door een autoriteit of ambtenaar behorende tot enig rechtelijk orgaan van de staat, waaronder documenten van het Openbaar Ministerie, griffiers of gerechtsdeurwaarders; administratieve documenten; notariële akten; op onderhandse stukken geplaatste offici?le verklaringen zoals verklaringen omtrent registratie, het bestaan van een document op een bepaalde datum en de echtheid van een handtekening.
