Bijv. de G20 heeft de ~ van de VS en de EU doorbroken. Beide grote handelsblokken komen waarschijnlijk vaker tegenover elkaar te staan. Zo is de EU bezig om vrijhandelsovereenkomsten te bereiken met Mercosur, het handelsblok in Latijns en Zuid-Amerika. Op hun beurt zijn Amerikanen niet altijd even ongelukkig met bilaterale handelsakkoorden omdat ze daarin veel meer invloed kunnen uitoefenen. (2004)
